- "We have been notified by Frank Watts that long
time llama owner, founder of the (then) Sunshine States Llama Association, that
became SSLA, previous SSLA president and Journal Editor Myra Freeman has passed
away. SSLA members who have been around for a few years remember her well.
Information about her funeral service is below."
Begin forwarded message:
I got your addresses from the SSLA webpage. My
name
is Frank Watts. I am the ex husband of Myra Freeman,
who was president of your organization for several
years. (I provided production and layout for the
newsletter for the first several years while Myra was
editor.)
I wanted to let you know that Myra passed away on
Tuesday, Jan 29.
Myra and I divorced in 1990 but remained friends. I
know that she has not been involved in the llama world
for quite a few years, so I don't know if anyone in
the organization even knows her these days or not. I
am in the process of writing her obit, which is how I
happened across your site. I will include the portion
of her obit detailing her funeral in case you know of
anyone in the organization who knows her and who lives
nearby enough to be interested in attending the
funeral. That portion follows:
==============================
Myra Jessie Freeman, 68, of 325 Forest Creek drive
died January 29, 2008 after a brief illness. Born in
Lake Charles, LA, she was the daughter of the late
William Lester Freeman and Mary Louise Martin Freeman.
The family will receive visitors at 2:30 PM on
Saturday, Feb 2 at Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home, 100 E.
North Second St., Seneca, SC. The funeral service
will follow at 4:00 PM.

- There are more pictures of
2007 events,
and this associated write up from Kim Kyst about their 4H organization.
I
would love to get the word out about our Love of Llama 4-H Program. Below
is some information about our program along with photos attached. We would
love for you to use our information either on the web or in print to inform
others of the exciting happenings going on here in
Jefferson
,
GA
with our llama program.
We have been doing the program here at Chelian Farm since March 07. Our
membership grew quickly with the start of the new school year when we added five
of the six active members. Our original member Angela Hulsey has been
active since the beginning of the program, during her involvement with the
program she has been involved with the llamas by learning daily care, halter
training, handling, grooming, first aide, pasture clean up, assisting with
fundraising efforts where we set up petting areas for the Jackson County Humane
Society and Tree House Ministries (home for abused children). She also
included her llama friend Cash with school projects and shared him with her 5th
grade class. She also jumped into the show ring at the Regional Show in
Gainesville
in Oct ‘07 with Cash and Kruze; she participated in the Opening Ceremonies
along with youth showmanship, and halter classes with both Kruze and Cash.
Since then her family have become owners of Cash her 4-H companion.
Our current members are Angela Hulsey, Cassandra Haley, Tristan McDowell,
Tristan Gaskins, Taylor Brown, and Hali Sauls.
Since the addition of new members in October our group has been involved with
the Gilliland’s Farm Day by demonstrating obstacles. Our club also
prepared for Jefferson and Commerce Holiday Parades. Our club entered a float
for the Jefferson Parade on Dec. 1st, and in addition all six
members, their families and friends along with six llamas walked in the parade
line up. For the Commerce Parade we took five members and five llamas, along
with friends and families to participate in the parade line up. Our Holiday
Party was a gathering at Chelian Farms hosted by Paul and Kim Kyst, where our
members and families learned how to felt Christmas Tree Ornaments from fiber and
share some holiday cheer.

Holiday
Activities can be seen on "Pictures of
2007" page
It’s
been a very exciting program for the families that have been involved. The
children have shown lots of interest in learning and enjoying these beautiful
animals. Some are excited about having a llama birthday party, they have
also put a spin on bringing the family pet to school to share, they enjoyed
being involved in local parades, and they are looking forward to showing,
training themselves and the animals for performance classes and much more.
Anyone interested in being involved with this program please contact Kim Kyst.
I would love to share your knowledge of these wonderful animals with the
program.
We are also looking for youth packs; all six of the children are interested in
training the llamas for packing and performance. If anyone is ready to let
go of a used packs, please contact Kim Kyst with the information. We are
interested in purchasing packs prior to February so that we have time to prepare
for the SSLA Hillbilly Show in Perry. You can reach Kim by email at kim@kyst.org
or 706-387-7506.
We would like to say Thank you to several farms within the area: Bill and
Susan Johns of “Little Brook Farms” allowed us to work with their llamas
during the Regional Show in
Gainesville
.
Vicky
Moses of “Second Time Around Mini Farm” donated two non-breeding males to
our program. Rebecca Wood of “Roxywood Farms” for passing along
information via the internet that has been useful and helpful.
